How Seasonal Allergies Affect The Skin?

Spring Allergies

As the weather is getting warmer, nothing feels better than spending time outside. For some, this is a massive challenge when allergies are involved. Over 10 million Brit’s suffer from pollen allergies.

As we have now officially entered spring and we can now find pollen floating in the air. For allergy suffers this, unfortunately, means sneezing, sniffling, congestion and skin flare-ups. It can be found that skin conditions like eczema and hives can be linked to seasonal allergies.

Suffering from a sore throat and itchy eyes is not the only side effect of spring allergies. Allergies can also affect the skin, although eczema is not an allergy, it can flare up from the change in season. The skin can also get dry, uncomfortable and itchy due to the pollen in the air.

What are pollen allergies?

When plants bloom in the spring, they produce pollen. Pollen is the cause of allergy flare-ups. It is also, one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. When it comes to avoiding pollen, there is not much you can do, this is because pollen is a very fine powder produced by trees, flowers. grasses and weeds. However, you can minimise the misery.

Symptoms of pollen allergies:

  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy nose, eyes, ears and mouth
  • Stuffy nose (nasal congestion)
  • Red and watery eyes
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Red, irritated skin
  • Eczema flare-ups
  • Dry, itchy skin

Here are our top tips to surviving this spring with allergies:

Check your local pollen count forecast – it is recommended to stay indoors on high pollen count days and peak pollen times which are usually between 5 and 10 am. Dry, warmer and breezy days are the worst for pollen allergies however, damp days are better days to go out as the wetness holds the pollen on the ground.

Keep pollen from getting into your house- keep windows shut and use air conditioning

Change your clothes frequently – you should change your clothes as soon as you get in to avoid spreading pollen around your house.

Treat – in regard to allergy medication, it is best to start taking medication before allergy symptoms strike.

Avoid contact with pollen – when outdoor wear a mask or sunglasses to help avoid contact with pollen

Don’t allow pets on your bed or in your bedroom

Showering and washing your hair and face before bed to remove any collected outdoor allergens at night when allergy symptoms seem to get worse.

Changing and wash bedding and pillowcases frequently with a fragrance- and allergen-free detergent to minimize exposure to dust and pollen.

Removing shoes and outerwear at the door.
