National Eczema Week - Eight must-have products for eczema sufferers

Did you know that this week is National Eczema Week? And what better opportunity to talk about what we do best – helping you feel good in your own skin! Dealing with eczema on a daily basis can be a tough challenge. It requires precision and perseverance, and a skincare routine can be hard to maintain when you’re just trying to get on with your day. That’s why the team have put our heads together and come up with eight absolute must-have products to help you deal with eczema every day.

1.Moisturiser – This one’s bit of a no-brainer, but finding the right moisturiser for your skin isn’t always easy. Natural moisturisers are key to keeping eczema under control daily. They reduce the chances of your skin developing extreme dryness or oiliness – both states can be very harmful for your skin and can inflame your eczema further. 2.Bamboo Clothing – You may have seen bamboo socks appearing on the market more commonly these days but, more and more so, we’re seeing underwear, t-shirts and all sorts of other items of bamboo-based clothing popping up also. This is great news for eczema sufferers, as bamboo is particularly soft and gentle on the skin, very breathable and has antibacterial properties. 3.Oats – Nothing fancy here. The first box on the shelf at Sainsbury’s will do the trick. An oat bath can be an absolute dream when it comes to dealing with eczema-prone skin. Simply combine a cupful of ground oats with some lukewarm water and mix until soft. Then, transfer the oats to a warm bath and lather up! It might sound a bit strange, but your skin will thank you, as you’ll be feeling smooth and your skin hydrated (and we think it smells pretty great too, funnily enough).

4.Humidifier – Keeping the air around you properly humidified will be crucial in keeping eczema in check. More and more of us are working from home these days, so making sure your surroundings are suitable for your skin is an absolute must. A humidifier will help slow or stop those itches and dryness in your skin, leaving you to get on with the tasks at hand with no distractions.

5.Gentle Cleansing Products – If you’ve suffered from eczema for a while, you’re probably all too familiar with scanning the back of products for ingredient lists and leaving lots of shower gels and body washes on the shelves for containing irritating, synthetic ingredients. The selection of scents and fragrances in popular wash products is pretty impressive these days, but if your skin is sensitive to synthetic perfume, you’ll have a much harder time finding something that is gentle enough for your skin and also smells pleasant. 6.Yoga/Meditation app – We mentioned yoga before, but here’s a slightly deeper look at it as a means of dealing with eczema. Treating the mental aspect of your skin is just as important as treating the physical! One of the main triggers of an eczema flare-up is stress. Long working days, kids being schooled from home, hubby apparently STILL incapable of picking his socks up off the floor – all these things can contribute to stress. Make sure you take the time for peace of mind, just a few times per week, and see your skin as calm and relaxed as you are. 7.Food Diary – Everyone’s body is different and the food we consume can play a huge role in the condition of our skin. Keeping track of what you’re eating can help to identify “trigger foods,” which you can then reduce or eliminate from your diet altogether. Try out an “elimination diet,” in which you cut out certain foods or food groups that you suspect is triggering your eczema and use the food diary to keep track of your progress! 8.Supplements – This is a tricky one to recommend as, as previously mentioned, everyone’s body is different and has different nutritional requirements. Always consult a doctor before making significant dietary alterations but studies have shown that certain supplements, such as fish oil, Zinc, Melatonin and Vitamins D and E are effective at lessening the effects of eczema in some, due to various qualities, such as anti-inflammatory components and fatty acids. But the first stop if of course to make sure you eat a balanced diet packed with fruits and vegetables, to make sure your body is being properly nutrified!
